Owls-

Owls-
I thought I would do a post on the beautiful creature the Owl. I believe I have already done one
post last year on the owl, but I have seen so many wonderful photo's of the Owl and the wonderful
movie called: 'The Legend of the Guardians' I thought I would do another. I have been having a lovely
time in the garden these days. The weather has been so nice here in Washington state. So my posting maybe
here and there. So for You new followers I just would love to welcome you all and just let you know,
that during the summer months I am in my garden alot. I welcome you all to the summer time and 'my
humble blog and stories - the Re-blog on the Owl...
Owls have are one of the oldest living birds and their
origins can been traced back to 60+million years. Owls have
been featured in almost every ancient Mythology and legend in
every culture too. The fact that it hasn't changed much, in
those 60+million years and being one of the oldest bird is do to
the fitness of the owl features and how successful they are
in catching their prey. One of these features would be their capability of an excellent clear eyesight a night - Hence NIGHT VISION- This strong feature of night vision enables them to flight silently through
the night without being detected by either man or their prey - Hence with the silent flight and their very
strong large claws, plus an excellent plumage of contributes to their nature skills of survival over the course of
Millions of years. It is said that only a few cave drawing have been found that related to these
magnificent birds of prey and it seems that the owl is one of them over 60+million years ago.
The Owl is truly an international and cultural Icon too! This I found that thought the different culture's
the owl can mean many things to the people in the different cultures. It can be from the very Icon and
looked upon as a good omen. As a very intellect bird bring good luck to their villages or small counties
and helping the sick its wisdom/ to the other of a ill bad omen of harbinger of death. Bring bad luck
to villages etc. So in a word the Owl is beautiful, but has a lot of controversy that surrounds it over the
millions of years they have taken flight on this Earth. There are lotsssss that believe that the Owl is a
Good Owen - And there is alotsssssssssss that believe that the Owl is a Bad Owen. In many societies an
owl is taken as an ill or very bad omen and even a harbinger of DEATH, while in other societies he is
considered the WISE & REPUTED almost like a PHILOSOPHER. There are also very THICK LAYERS
OF MYSTERY THAT HAVE ALWAYS ENSHROUDED THE OWLS TOO. THIS COULD BE
THE PROMINENT FEATURE OF THE OWL-THEIR VERY INTELLIGENT LOOKING ROUND
GLISTENING EYES THAT SEEM TO BE ABLE TO READ YOUR MIND.
In the Western cultures there is an nursery rhyme that is portrayed by the iconic Owl..
A wise old owl lived in an oak
the more he saw the less he spoke
the less he spoke the more he heard
Why can't we all be like that wise old bird?
Here are a few Mythical known Owls that you might find interesting-
 Athene Noctua- Athene's Owl-
The Athene Noctua was a favorite owl of Athena - the Goddess of Wisdom in in
Athene Noctua' Bubo Owl
Greek Mythology. In the of Athens, they named the great city after the Goddess of Wisdom.
And Athena's Owl was named 'Bubo' which was always shown perched on Athena's shoulder.
Zeus had asked Athena to hand over her beloved 'Bubo' to Perseus, but she did not want
to part with her beloved Bubo. So, as the story in the Greeks go... Athene saw help of
of the Goddess Hephaestus, who mad an exact replica of Bubo' in iron and brass to serve
the purpose. In the eyes of the Gods I guess it work, for the coins of Athens had the figure of
the Goddess Athena in the grand city as the patron deity for centuries with her Bubo' on her shoulder too.
Athena was also known as for her bright eyes and farsightedness too.
Barn Owl-
The Barn Owl is my next Owl, but it seems that this has two different types of owl families.
Barn Owl
These two families are that of the English folklore of very long ago. It is said that the Barn Owl in the
English folklore to be a bird of doom. That it being a nocturnal bird, an owl which is associated with
darkness in turn is associated with death too. The Barn Owl if seen flying by a window in England is said
is a sign of a sickly person and is considered the sign of a oncoming death in that family.
The Hoot of the Barn owl  or even the sight of any type of an Barn Owl is considered the oncoming
of a bad storm, with cold weather hesse there could be very bad electrolytic storms too. Some say
in the West that if one goes around the the tree wherein an Barn Owl is sitting, the owl could see the
person turning its head in a full circle till it straggles itself odd Eh! It seems that the Barn Owls for soon
reason have been given a bad rap for some reason. And I really don't understand why in my own
opinion... Now the people in the North England they consider the sight of any Owl an good omen.
According to a 12th century preacher, by the name of - Odo of Cheriton The owl stole the rose, which
was meant to be awarded for beauty. And all the other birds sentenced the Owl to this day, imprisonment of allowing him to fly exclusively only at night.

Lechuza Owl-
The Lechuza Owl is basically from a Mexican Myth  that is surrounded around a black witch who is said  to whistle in the night to call the people of the night.
Lechuza Owl
And whoever does responds to her whistle, these folks are found the next morning arising with multiple bruises all over their bodies. In Mexico and its bordering states is said to believe that its the Lechuze that was turned into a owl - which owing to her evil witchcraft. There as some ancient Mexicans that will claim to have seen the Lechuza in the night in the form of an old and ugly black women... but it just depends on who you talk too.
Askalaphos-
Persephone, while living in the underworld, was allowed by Pluto to come and go into the outer world
Persephone and Askalaphos turned into an Owl
provided that she did not eat the prohibited fruit. This of course was the pomegranate, but of course Hades

didn't want Persephone to leave his kingdom of the Underworld so he had offered the lovely Persephone 7 to 8 pomegranate seeds just before she was to go back to the upper world with her mother not knowing that it would change her life for ever.[Note the story of Persephone and the taking of the pomegranate seeds has be debated in many different ways on if she wanted to stay in the underworld as Queen or go back home to be with her mother- I have done a post on the subject if you are curious ]  Askalaphos, son of Styx informed the gods Zeus/Hades that she had eaten the pomegranate. For this disclosure, he was punished by Demeter Persephone mother - who turned him [Askalaphos -son of Styx] into a spotted lizard and buried him under a stone. Herakles released him, but Persephone, to avenge the disclosure by Askalaphos, transformed him into an owl, and since then he remains unchanged and living in dark like the underworld
as an Owl.
The Owl of Minerva-
This Owl is one of my favorites mostly because this Owl is how my great grand mother got her
Owl Minerva
name 'Nana Minerva' kinda cool I think. I did get to know her as a child and she was a very kind lady, Strong wise and lots of stories to tell me and my brother and sister. She wasn't very tall only 4'11 which is kinda interesting I a have taken after my great grandmother Nana Minerva because when I as a young women I was 5' now I am 4'11 just like my Nana Minerva' which I am very proud of .And someday I too will be a Nana.... I do miss her very much but my mum has taken her name for the grandchild There is also the Minerva, also known as Pallas, was the Greek deity born out of the head of Jupiter in fully grown form. Cecrops announced that whoever of the two deities, Minerva and Neptune, produced the best gift for creation would be honored with a city to be named after the winner. Neptune produced a horse, and Minerva grew an olive tree from the ground and won the prize. She is considered the deity of wisdom, art, and the patroness of all the sciences beneficial for mankind. She is portrayed as armed, in standing form, with a smiling face with a spear in her right hand and with her feet like the claws of an owl. Her feet symbolize her cunning for the hunt and wisdom like an owl.

Bloddeuwedd-
Gwydion was a magician whose mother forbid him to marry any normal woman. Lleu then created for him a
Bloddeuwedd Owl
wife made of flowers bearing the name Bloddeuwedd. She persuaded Lleu to tell her what would cause his death which under her trance he did reveal to her. Using that knowledge, Bloddeuwedd killed him. Just before he died Lleu transformed her into an owl saying, “You will not dare to show your face ever again in the light of day, and that will be because of enmity between you and all other birds. It will be in their nature to harass you and despise you wherever they find you. And you will not lose your name which will always be “Bloddeuwedd” meaning “flower faced.”

Arianrhod The Silver Wheel-
According to the Welsh people the Goddess Arianrhood is the moon and the star goddess. She is also a
Arianrhod the Owl
deity of embodiment. Arianrhod can also transform herself into an beautiful owl and can revert into other
form at will. Arianrhod is also capable of powerful flight in the night and is gifted the sight of night. By
virtue of her amazing owl eyes she can even peep through the souls of the dead. Arianrhod can also
console and comfort those who seek. Her gift is that the dead are carried to her by the moon, to the
land of the dead. She is as swift as a falcon and is as farsighted as the wise old owl yet as comforting as the
goddess that she is - like a kindly old lady of the lamp.

The Owl of Lakshmi-
Lakshmi is an Indian goddess of wealth. In the Hindu community of Bangladesh and the Indian state of
Lakshmi Indian Goddess
Orissa, the goddess is associated with the white owl which is taken as an omen of good luck and prosperity. It is said that the owl accompanies Lakshmi Devi while she rides an elephant. The owl is represented as the partner of Vishnu, the major god in Hindu mythology.
